Babywearing parents often hear "I wish they had those when I was having kids!". Because our culture has, for the past several generations, focused so pointedly on teaching our babies to be "independant" and not "spoiling" them, commercially produced carriers, while available, were not seen very often. I have in my own personal collection a few commercially available carriers (manufactured by Gerry) from the early 1950s. In fact, cloth baby carriers were almost certainly invented even before the wheel. All across the globe and in varying shapes and tying configurations, simple cloth carriers are among our very first inventions. The following clip from the CBC archives shows the lovely Mrs Peterson demonstrating some of her "baby toting" devices in 1963.
